Danish Minister Dan Jørgensen:
Joint approach leads to improved animal welfare

The Danish Minister Dan Jørgensen hosted an international conference on pig welfare in April 2015. The conference was attended by some 400 stakeholders including politicians, NGOs and researchers. The joint objective was to discuss whether and how solutions can be found to globally improve pig welfare.

A wide range of subjects were discussed during the conference from castration to accommodation.
A political declaration was signed by the ministers from the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Denmark that will be submitted to the European Commission with the request to introduce measures to improve pig welfare in Europe. The urgent advice to the EC is to adopt the European 2008/120/EC guideline that lays down minimum standards.

After the conference, Dan Jørgensen expressed his satisfaction with the results: “Joint action leads to results. Together we can create an animal welfare platform in the EU where research results and best practices can be exchanged. I am convinced that we can structurally raise animal welfare standards with such a platform”.
