The pork sector in Denmark is still reticent when it comes to stopping castration. However, in Denmark animal welfare is increasingly being put on the agenda.
A Danish delegation consisting of 15 representatives of the Danish slaughter and retail sector as well as NGOs and the government visited the Netherlands in October 2014 to be informed about the methods, experiences and situation in the Netherlands. According to pig farmer and chairman of the Boars 2018 steering party, Annechien ten Have-Mellema and researcher and research leader Dr Gé Backus, it is clear that Danish chain partners are re-orienting their castration dossier in the light of European objectives (the Brussels declaration). Public interest in animal welfare is also increasing in Denmark. The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark are going to organise an animal welfare summit that is intended to urge other EU member states to optimise interactions with pets and agricultural animals and will be held in the Netherlands in the near future.
