Uncastrated male pigs can start to display boisterous, sexual or even aggressive behaviour. This behaviour can negatively influence the animals’ welfare and health. It is however a natural, hierarchy-determining process within a litter.
Research carried out during the ‘Boars Heading for 2018’ programme has demonstrated that boar behaviour is extremely complex. Many factors can be of influence and cause unrest among boars. A trial at 70 pig farms produced a great deal of information on boar behaviour and has provided an increasingly detailed impression of the challenges and solutions.
